Recommendations

Just sitting here late at night listening to good music and thinking good thoughts and wanted to share... And also, I LOVE getting recommendations so totally feel free to share good things you've liked with ME. Don't worry about what you think I'd like- just tell me what you'd like. Use the little email button or leave a note in the guestbook or notes section. Those kinds of things totally make me happy.

Recently liked things to recommend:

Music

-Tracks-
Surreal- Gratitude Suite ... a good hip-hop track with an awesome jazz piano sample in the background; definitely worth a check out.
New Edition- Rewind the Memories... from the new New Edition CD (One Love)...harkens back time old school style
Rachael Yamagata- The Reason Why... it's on my Sunday Morning Musings playlist on my iPod if that gives any indication to the style of the music...a good kinda song to listen to when you want to be a little bit sad and musing when it's cloudy outside....girl with a guitar-eque
Jason Mraz- Sleeping to Dream -- off the Jason Mraz live cd/dvd that's out right now (Tonight, Not Again) ... this song is pretty much what happens to me every single night. Sigh.

-CDs-
John Legend- Get Lifted...is his new CD that comes out on Dec 28th, though I'm listening to it advanced from a DJ friend... and I'm definitely digging what I'm hearing- he's got this old school voice and a cool phrasing and vibe. Check out his single- I Used to Love You
Citizen Cope- The Clarence Greenwood Recordings... Checked him out at the Casbah a couple weeks ago-- a nice rock/blues fusion kind of thing going.... check out: Sideways or Bullet and a Target

Movies

Garden State-- if you haven't seen it, I HIGHLY recommend it, especially for those 20somethingish people. You'll be lucky to find a theatre still showing it, but it comes out on DVD on the 28th, so go get it or rent it then.
Bridget Jones- The Edge of Reason--- ahh, I love Bridget, the movies, the books, and Colin Firth.. the part where she gets high is worth the price of admission alone
The Incredibles- if not for the fact that my friend Dan is an animator for Pixar and he worked on this movie and i am SOOOOOOO proud of him which makes it so exciting, it's a great movie on it's own. Even if I didn't brag about what a cool job he has and how great the movie is every 10 seconds....:)

Books

Middlesex- Jefferey Eugenides ... this book is AWESOME. It's probably one of the best books I've read in quite a while. Well written, lush storytelling, unique viewpoint, great language. It's about a hermaphrodite named Callie/Cal...and basically the premise is that you need to know where you've been to know who you are-- so it tells the story of 3 generations of Greeks beginning with her grandparents...I totally cannot give you a synoposis that will do it justice, so just read it.

The Unthinkable Thoughts of Jacob Green- Joshua Braff ...this book is great so far though I'm still in progress so I can't totally recommend it 100% just yet. It's about this Orthodox Jewish boy growing up under his domineering father set in the 1970's.

Websites

Posthipchick This girl is HILARIOUS. I'm telling you. Go. There. Now. She's a teacher and I never actually thought of my middle school teachers as people... but MAN. I sent the link to Gil and he said she should quit teaching and go into standup comedy. She's got enough fodder for 10 years worth of acts teaching middle school kids, I think. But even her serious moments are awesome...I actually TEARED up when she talked about being a teacher and the shortcomings of the educational system. Does that make me a nerd?

Food

Fish Tacos. I am seriously the world's least adventurous person when it comes to food, so this is not a new food discovery for most people inside of SoCal... but they're great! I haven't come across one I haven't liked yet! It's a whole new food world opening up for me. Go eat one...Rubios and Cotijas are what I've tried so far.

I think that's all I can think of off the top of my head..and now I'm realizing it's 3am and I'm supposed to wake up in 4 hours. I really need to stop being such an insomniac and go to sleep now. AHHH! There.
