Primary Colors and Gold Teeth

I went downtown on the Muni with my roomate, Chin. The air of the night was crisp with an incoming rain, and I wore layers of clothes with a jaunty bright green scarf that was always too impratically warm for San Diego. We stopped at Blondie's Pizza to have a slice of pizza that I've been craving. One of the guys there with a mouth full of gold teeth asked me out on a date. I had to politely decline, but it was still amusing nonetheless. We made our way through the streets full of people, streaming out of every which way, shopping and buying various items. I exhibited a lot of control (impressing my roomate considerably) and barely bought anything aside from the necessities.

I did make one extraneous purchase however: A bright red peacoat. It's a color I never thought I could wear, a very far departure from the neutrals, the pinks, browns and greens of my San Diego wardrobe. It doesn't match anything I already own. But I put it on and stood in front of the mirror while the gay sales associate declared that it was a color that commanded attention. And it is. And maybe it's the perfect piece to break out of my neutral purgatory.

I had that moment too. Another one of the moments that I've been anticipating since the idea to move to San Francisco was just that- an idea. I stepped out of Victoria's Secret, into the night air right in front of Union Square- the buildings lit up and the people moving, the cars whizzing past me... and I felt it. That feeling of being in the city, the air, the action. It was night and I was 521 miles away from home, living away from everything I knew. It was the moment that I realized I made it happen, made it a reality for myself. It felt just like how I thought it would. It felt right.
